Reciprocal Reading

We did reciprocal reading on two PDFs called What we ate and what we invested.

First, we did the six roles of reciprocal reading. They are: leader, predictor, clarifier, questioner and summariser. The PDF we read about was what the soldiers ate during WW1.

The most helpful role was the clarifier because it helped us unpack a load lots of information during the text.

Next, we read another PDF about what we invested. This text was about the money and how they lived. During WW1, Britain needed food. So they purchased NZ’s entire exportable supply of beef, mutton, lamb, cheese, butter, wool, condensed milk, dried milk, sheep and calf skins. This costed them 96 million pounds.

The most helpful role was the questioner because it unpacked lots of questions that we couldn't understand during the text.

Next time, I should find more interesting words.

Simple Machines

Did you know that there are three simple machines that help people work easier and faster. They are called: Screw, Wheel and axle, and pulley.

Balancing

We did a range of activites using sports equipment based on balancing.

First, we used the netball equipment. We balanced on one leg and passed the netball to the chest.

The netball equipment was kind of hard because it was hard balancing on one leg and controlng it.

Next, we used the rugby equipment. We passed by standing on the side and passing across the body.

The rugby equipment was easy because I controled my tipping point.

After, we used the hockey equipment. We had to stand sideways and hit the ball by using the hockey stick slowley.

The hockey equipment was hard because I kept on missing the ball and I couldn't control my tipping point.

Then, we used the frisbe equipment. We passed the frisbe sideways and passing the frisbe across the body.

The frisbe equipment was a little bit hard because I had to step sideways and I tried to catch my tipping point.

Lastly, we used the basketball equipment. We balanced on one leg, dribbling the ball, and passing the ball to the chest.

The basketball was hard becasue I had to balance on one leg and dribble at the same time.

Up and Down

I learnt how to say questions that had an object on top.

First, we learnt how to say the object that is on top of the book. "Kei hea tei ika hei runga i te pukapuka".

After, we made a poster by labeling 10 items in the kitchen and labeling it with maori.

Next time, I should work on saying the top and bottom maori questions.

Tuesday 25 May 2021

Introductions

I learnt how to write hooks in introductions.

First, we watched a video that explained the hook of a introduction and what a introduction is. Then we did a hook about Mr Oglivie.

Next, we wrote an introduction and a hook about three different topics. Did you know that the largest firework ever was displayed in the Thunder Over Louisville? Fireworks use gunpowder, metal salt and strontium carbonate (red fireworks). When it mixes together it makes a loud bang.

Then, we wrote an introduction and a hook about a life cycle of a butterfly. Did you know that female butterflies lay their eggs under a lear or plant? The life cycle of a butterfly takes 28 days to 32 days. Butterflies have four stages of life. They are: eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly.

Lastly, we wrote an introduction and a hook about how chocolate are made. Did you know that it takes 400 cocoa beans to make one pound of chocolate? There are 4 mechanisms on how chocolate are made. They are cocoa beans, cocoa butter, sugar, milk powder or alternative milk. The process can take up to eight days, depending on the species of the cacoa bean.

Next time, I should work on my hook and introductions to add more information.

Calendars

Calendars show us the day, week, or month.

There are 12 months in a year, they are; January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December.

Months have 28, 30, or 31 days.

There are number patterns on a calendar by looking for four connectiong days, for example 20, 60, and 100.
Knowing before and after number sequence and 7 timestables helps us reading a calendar.

Problem Solving

I made problem solving questions about analogue time.

First, I wrote a sentence. For example: Mark started a meeting at 8:45. It finished at 10:00 o’clock. How long was Mark's meeting?

After, I added diagrams or a picture of analogue time.

I enjoyed this task because I wrote my own problem solving questions.

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

I used cause and effect sentences to explain the life cycle of a butterfly.

First, I wrote an cause and effect sentence for the eggs. The mother lays eggs on the leaf therefore the mother is able to find food.

Next, I wrote an cause and effect sentence for the caterpillar. Caterpillars are incredibly hungry this causes it will eat leaves and flowers.

Then, I wrote an cause and effect sentence for the chrysalis. When the caterpillar finished growing it makes a chrysails in order to protect itself.

After, I wrote an cause and effect sentence for the butterfly. The caterpillar hatched out of the chrysails as a result it will turn into a butterfly.

This task was interesting because I learnt the life cycle of a butterfly.

Tipping Point

I learnt about my tipping point.

First, we revised what a tipping point is. A tipping point is when you are about to fall.

After, we used the tipping point skill based on a game called "Block Twister." Block twister is placing body parts on a tile.

This task was easy because I was able to catch my tipping point.

Passing

I learnt how to tell someone to pass something on.

First, I revised what tenei, tena, tera. Tenei is here, tena is there, and tera is over there.

After, I learnt how to tell someone to pass something on. For example: Hoatu te Ika ki te taha maui. This means pass the fish to the left.

This activity was easy because I learnt how to pass something to someone in Maori.

Basic facts boxes

I completed the speed up demon challenge up to 5.

First, I opened up my basic facts boxes sheet and an online timer. The sheet I did was subtration.

After, I put my results on a google slide. (3 minutes and 11 seconds) and I got 100/100 correct.

Next time, I should do the speed up demon challenge.

Reciprocal Reading

We used reciprocal reading to read a text called "The Maori Pioneer Battalion."

First, there was a leader. A leader is the one who assigns the roles during reciprocal reading.

Next, there was a predictor. A predictor is the one who takes an educational guess one what the topic is about.

Then, there was a clarifier. A clarifier is the one who asks someone what a word is.

After, there was a questioner. A questioner is the one who asks questions about the text.

Last, there was a summariser. A summariser is the one who evalutes all the information they have read.

I enjoyed this task because we had to swap roles and figure out what the main topic was about.

Comment Thread

I wrote a comment thread with Ahli.

First, I replied on Ahli comment and wrote some other things like answering his questions. I wrote a question for Ahli so that he could answer.

After, Ahli replied back to my comment and it started a comment thread, and the comment thread started like a learning conversation.

I enjoyed this task because Ahli started a comment and I replied, so that means it is a comment thread.

SSR Selfie | Beginner's Bible | 2

I read the beginner's bible from page 61 up to page 113 by Kelly Pulley.

First, I read that Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh’s place. They said, “You must let the Israelites go free. If you do not, God will punish you. Pharaoh said “No! I do not know your God!” Then he made the Israelites work even harder.

Next, I read that God was not pleased. So he changed the main river into blood. Pharaoh did not care. “I would never let the Israelites go,” he said.

After, I read that God let the Israelites to the edge of the Red Sea. Pharaoh army were close behind. The Israelites did not know what to do.

I like God because he gives kind blessings to other people but sometimes he gives consequences to people who are bad.

Basic Facts Boxes

I completed the speed up demon challenge for subtraction up to 5.

First, I opened up an online timer and my basic facts boxes sheet.

After, I put my results on a google slide. 2 minutes and 54 seconds and I got 100/100.

Next time, I should try a harder level like division.

Cause and Effect

Cause and Effect helps people undrstand the mechanisms of an explanaition.

Cause is where something good happens or maybe something terrible happens. Effect is explaining the cause or what has happend.

As an example of cause Kimo didn't pay his bills for 5 years.

As an example of casual language therefore.

As an example of effect he got evicted.
Cause can explain the good thing in a certain way. Effect explains what or who is doing.

PB4L | Manners

Manners are used to tell people a greeting in a politful way.

Manners include saying a greeting and saying the person's name at the end. As an example: Good Morning Mr Wong or Good Afternoon Mr Wong.

Manners also include eye contact. Eye contact is impotant because it means that the person is directly talking to the other person.

Manners also include formal language. As an example: please, thank you, May I and You're welcome.

Manners are used everywhere because it greets people in a politful way and shows respect.

Problem Solving

In groups we solved questions about analog time.

First, we shared ideas on what we think the time was.

Next, we discussed the answers about the answers.

After, we discussed the process with Mr Ogilvie.

This was easy because we had to do addition.

Simple Machines

We searched around our school to find simple machines. They are wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, screw, lever.

Lever - a lever lifts up a wheelie chair to low level from a high level.

Inclined plane - a inclined plane helps people to walk up.

Pulley - a plulley is used to hang up the flag.

Screw - a screw helps things be stabled.

Wheel and axle - wheel and axle helps the wheelie bin move.

Wedge - a wedge is to keep the door open.

These machines are very interesting because they help other people work faster and easier.

Time

Digital and Analog time help us know what time of day it is.

Digital time display numbers for minutes and hours use AM and PM to tell us what time of day it is.

Elapsed time is how much time has gone by. Skip counting in 5's helps caculate how much time has elapsed.

Using an analog clock makes it easier to caculate elapsed time.

Balancing

We did balancing activties around our enviorment. Today we took a range of photos to show how we balanced.

The first photo we took was balancing on a wall.
The second photo we took was balancing on playground equipment.

The third photo we took was balancing by using with an assistant on the playground equipment.
The fourth photo we took was doing a short human pyrimad.
The last photo was balancing on the least amount of contact.

Next time, I should practice balancing in a proper position.

Prepositions

I learnt about prepositions.

The prepositions I used was for a picture in next to me was tenei. The next perposition I used was one meter away from me was tena. The last proposition I used was a distance away from me was tera.

These prepositions will help me because when I want something I can just say "Get me a snack from Tera."

Keywords

All texts include a range of words to share information with the reader.

Keywords are words that unlock a whole lot of information.

Kewords are used in a sentence to unlcok information in a specfic way. For example: Keyword - Shirking - Reminder - Avoiding my chores, Avoiding your job (Duty).

Keywords can help people understand the main information about a word.

Simple Machines

Simple machines are tools that help people work easier.

Wedge - a wedge are used to cut

Pulley - a pulley lifts up heavy objects from a low level to a higher level.

Screw - a screw fixes a loose object make it into a stable object.

Inclined plane - a inclined plane is basicly a ramp that makes heavy moving objects go up like a wheelchair.

Lever - a lever is lifting up a heavy object by providing power or using a stick or something that is long.

Wheel and axle - a wheel and axle is used to move around easily but needs force to push.

These machines are very interesting because they help other people work faster and easier.

Balance

Group B did an amount of different activities based on balancing.

First, we talked about what balance is. Balance is keeping your body in a stable position.

Next, we had to cross a beam but people going at the same time.

After, we balanced on a ball without falling of with our tipping point. A tipping point is where your about to fall.

Next time I should practise my balancing.

Explanation

I wrote an explanation planner about how a bike works.

First, I worte an introduction. A bike is used in sport where an amount of players ride a bike around a course like Iron Man.

Next I worte the mechanisms/main points. A bike requires a frame. This allows people to sit properly on the  bike. A bike requires pedals and a chain. This allows the chain to transfer power from the pedals. A bike requires handlebars. This allows people to control and steer. A bike requires brakes. This allows people to slow down when going fast.

After, I did my summary. A bike requires a human to control the bike and make the bike work.

Next time, when I write an explanation planner then I should be more specific on my mechanisims/main points.

Classroom Questions

I learnt some questions that will help me in the classroom.

The first question I learnt was Kua Mutu. Kua Mutu means finished.

The question after was Kua Marama. Kua Marama means do you understand or Marama - understand.

Next time when I practice my questions, I should remember them to say them to my teachers.

Analog Clock

Analog Clocks are a piece of technology that helps tell time.

A clock has 3 mechinisms. The second hand moves around the clock the fastest. The minute hand is the longest and moves when the second completer 1 rotation. A full rotation of the minute hand is 1 hour. The hour hand moves the slowest and moves between the big numbers.

An analog clock requires you to look outside to know if it is morning or afternoon.
