Digital Sundial | SLJ

Today Nanogirl has set up a task where you had to make your own sundial. A sundial is a type of clock but it uses a triangle instead of hands. The equipment you need are cardboard, pencil, blue tack, string, scissors, tape and a ruler.

When you put a sundial in the sun, the shadow of the triangle starts to move on the clock, just like a real clock.

I didn't have the write equipment because I didn't have cardboard, tape, blue tack, and string so I had to make it digital on a google drawing. I don't understand how why sundials is a type of clock but I think it uses time in a ancient way.

  1. Mōrena Hector,

It’s Charlotte here, a commenter for the Manaiakalani Summer Learning Journey. You have done some amazing work on the ‘Nanogirl Sundial’ task!

I think that it is pretty amazing how we can make something like a sundial out of things like cardboard! What did you think of this task? I really like the Nanogirl tasks because I think Science is so fascinating!

I liked how this activity had a lot to do with the outdoors! I think that spending time in the outdoors is so much fun! I like to go swimming at the beach and also enjoy going on walks outside! What do you like to do outside?

This sundial task was amazing. I didn't know what a sundial was until I watched Nanogirl's activity yesterday and I think Science is so fascinating too because of all of the experiments that you can do.

I like swimming in pools rather than swim at the beach because there are no showers there and the pool is yuck, green, salty, and cold. So thats why I would rather swim at pools instead of beaches. Like Shakespear beach, the water was salty and there was mushed up sand that smelt like rotten eggs.

I like to go on adventures outside because you can go through forests and in the forests there are native animals or insects or creatures that you could have a look at. Just like Bear Grylls, he is a trained professional at going to dangerous adventures.

When I grow up, I wanna be like Bear Grylls and experince all native animals or insects or creatures, but you need to take lots and lots of trainging before you do the real stuff.

What did you wanna be when you grew up and why?

    1. Mōrena Hector,

      Sorry for the late reply!
It doesn't sound like you have had a very pleasant experience with beaches so I can definitely see why you prefer swimming in pools rather than at the beach! My favourite beach is the Ruakaka beach in Northland and I don't think this one smells at all.
One thing I do like about pools is that sometimes they have hydroslides! What is your favourite part about going to the pools?

WOW Bear Grylls is so cool! I think it is awesome that you want to work with nature when you're older.
When I am older I want to be a teacher, I am actually in the middle of my teaching degree now so I have nearly achieved this goal!

  3. Hi Hector,
Well done on your digital representation of your sundial, it's really good!
You can also make a sundial by placing an stick upright in the ground and looking at the shadow it casts on the ground. If you place something like a rock or bottle top on the ground where the shadow is cast at one time of day, then come back and look at it later on in the day you should see that the shadow has moved. This is also how sundials were made.

On Netflix, Bear Grylls made a sundial by placing a stick on the ground, so he knew where he would go next.

Have you seen Bear Grylls on Netflix?
